A Big Girls 2nd Birthday

Posted 5 years ago

This past Canada Day, July 1 2012 also was my daughters 2nd birthday and the first gathering we had at our house.  I was planning on a great post with a zillion photos but with a million things going on and being all pregnant I just didn’t take as many photos as I wished. My mother has some, as does my sister in law but I have thus far been unable to obtain those photos. So for now I just thought I would share some photos of the cookies and cake made to the same specs on my last posts on Ombre Cake and Sugar Pinwheel Cookies. I also made pinwheel cupcake toppers out of fondant. They are made the same way you would make one out of paper really. I was going to do a post on that but then I found one on A Baked Creation for you. So here are just some photos!

This cake was a comedy of disasters. First I made enough batter for all 6 layers, tinted in and spent the better part of the next 3 hours baking, as I only had 2 pans. As I am taking them all out of the pans they are falling apart like no ones business and are angering me in a way only inanimate objects can. My husband tastes it and says it tastes different then normal. THAT is when I realized I forgot the eggs. Yep. Pretty dumb. SO into the green bin my 3 hours of work went, and I started again. FINALLY cakes were fantastic, so I started the Swiss Meringue Buttercream. And it curdled. So bye bye to that batch and I started again. At this point it is about 8 or 9 pm and I had been working since 11am on cookies and cakes exclusively and was too worn out to get frustrated. (I realized I had made an error in that I put the bowl onto heat and THEN stuck the eggs in. You must slowly bring eggs up to heat or they curdle. My bad.)

Another thing that I was not prepared for was the topple factor on the cake. its 6 thing layers on a 6″ round. I never measured how high it was but probably more than 6″. Once it got to be about 1/3″ of a cake left it would not stand up anymore for cutting. My husband and I had to hold it with our hands as we cut. Kinda a messy cake to cut but VERY tasty. I mean topple is probably something that makes sense but I am to pregnant to use logic.

Also here is a photo of the birthday girl. Its the best one I have, which is sad because its not very good. But its the only one she is face to the camera. Not too sure what she is making that face for but she is playing with bubbles that were given to her as a present.
